Odysseus showed his heroism in this part because he was able to use his quick wit to devise a plan that saved his crew from Polyphemus. Moreover, Odysseus also demonstrates his wisdom during one of his final trials in Ithika where he faces the suitors.
Odysseus knows that he is no match for the strapping young suitors in his palace since they outnumber him. Therefore he is able to use his wits to create a cunning plan through disguises and deceptions, where he arranges a situation in which he alone is armed and the suitors are locked in a room with him.
